No one escapes from Alcatraz. Except in the movies. Clint Eastwood starred in a 1979 film that chronicles the true story of the escape of his character, Frank Morris, along with the Anglin brothers. The prisoners expanded air vents with spoons and crossed the icy waters on a boat made with inmates' rain jackets. But despite an extensive manhunt, the trio has never been found.
Recently, a Dutch team of meteorologists modelled ocean currents and showed that a departure from ‘the rock' between 11 p.m. and midnight that day had every chance of success. One year after the incredible escape, high maintenance costs and a poor reputation led to the closing of the 30-year-old, high-security prison. Alcatraz is now one of the main attractions in San Francisco. Artist Ai Weiwei, once imprisoned in China, recently presented seven installations here including Lego portraits of 176 political prisoners.
