Balboa Park: a maze of nature and flowers

A five-hectare park pays tribute to the conquistador, Vasco Núñez de Balboa, the first European to discover the Pacific in 1513.

Among the glorious facets of this park is the Panama-California exhibition, celebrating the inauguration of the Panama Canal the Port of San Diego is one of the major stops on the route. Gigantic haciendas in the popular Spanish Revival style were erected for the occasion.

Explore this majestic site and quiet ode to nature on foot, by tram, or on bike. Don't miss the tropical greenhouse, the remarkable orchid nursery and the roses, the cacti and the Japanese garden. You will also find a dozen museums, including one dedicated to aviation, as well as theatres, restaurants, and the San Diego Zoo with its 4,000 animals.

Managed by a foundation that works to protect endangered species, the zoo is a rare experience for visitors, who find themselves in the presence of white rhinos and pandas.
