Dance in pas de deux

Go see dance in the gold decor of the Second Empire under a Chagall ceiling at the Palais Garnier or in the weighty Art Deco decor (Louis Sue) at Chaillot.

Dance in Paris is showcased in festivals throughout the year, with about 15 productions every year in Île-de-France and Paris. There are also two bespoke locations to see dance: the Palais Garnier and the Palais de Chaillot.

A breath of fresh air wafted across the dance scene since August 2016, when Aurélie Dupont took over as the director of dance at the Opera with the aim to reinvigorate classical ballet in the capital. Productions at the Opera Garnier are nothing less than the best in the world. The former prima ballerina wants highly visual and internationally acclaimed choreographers to showcase the dancers both here and at its sister institution, the Opera Bastille.

The Chaillot National Theatre offers a very international programme (Carolyn Carlson, Mathilde Monnier, Trisha Brown...) that leaves ample room for regulars (Noé Soulier, Thomas Lebrun, Kader Attoun...) as well as long-running shows, often from Avignon. Under the very demanding Didier Deschamp, this is the realm of choreographers.
