Invented in the 16th century by a certain Franciscus Sylvius, doctor and chemist of German origin, gin quickly won over the English who are often credited for its creation. Wheat, rye, malted barley or corn are gin's main ingredients, whose particular aroma comes from the addition of grains and juniper berries.
As indicated by its name, Gin Lovers is a bar 100% dedicated to this drink. Here, you can find over 60 different brands of gin - both Portuguese and international -, several types of "botanicals" (used for maceration) and mineral waters, to create a nearly infinite variety of combinations. To make this experience even more astonishing, the bar is located in an old palace in the Príncipe Real district, between Bairro Alto and Largo do Rato, whose decoration has been fully preserved. For the hottest evenings, Gin Lovers also has a beautiful terrace just next to the Botanical Garden, where you can also enjoy a selection of local delicacies, including a platter of pataniscas de bacalhau (salt cod fritters) or salmon ceviche.
Born from the dreams of Carlos Alves, Gin Lovers is now a reference in the preparation and sale of gin-based cocktails and for a good reason: the spirited ambition of the establishment's team takes them all over the world, from Copenhagen to San Francisco by way of Paris, Barcelona and Funchal.
