Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, suspended between sky and sea.

Need some green? Then head to this garden suspended between sky and sea, in Cape Town's chic suburb.

Talking to the tips of the trees on the back of a curved serpent of timber and steel… that was the dream of a gardener who was madly in love with the sky. And you get to share in the experience. The Kirstenbosch Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway, a 130-metre long suspended pathway opened in 2014, is raised 12 metres above the green ‘sea' of the gardens. This extraordinary garden includes 9,000 South African plants, almost half of the 22,000 species inventoried in the country.

If an earthly paradise exists, it is here in the sounds of the leaves blowing in the wind, the exotic songs of birds and the flapping of the wings of butterflies. In the summer, the notes of major South African musicians can be heard during the Summer Sunset Concerts. You can admire the view while letting yourself be transported by the rhythm of the melodies.

After the show, have a look at the garden's sculptures and discover medicinal plants. Guided tours are possible.
