Maurizio Pollini takes La Scala

Whatever the programme, Maurizio Pollini at La Scala is a legendary virtuoso in a legendary venue.

Maurizio Pollini at La Scala in Milan is a classic match. A virtuoso pianist specialising in the romantic repertoire, a pillar of the Deutsche Grammophon label, and an icon since the 1970s, Pollini is legendary, and now he is to perform in a legendary palace of music. In the temple of Italian opera, do not expect him to perform contemporary composers like Nono or Boulez. Stockhausen, at the very most, could be on the programme—his Samstag and Montag aus Licht were produced here in the 1980s. The last time Pollini played at La Scala, he performed Allegro op. 8 and Fantasia op. 17 by Robert Schumann and Chopin's Barcarolle, Nocturnes, Polonaise and Scherzo No. 3 in C sharp minor Op. 38.
