Thrills galore

Fortaleza is a gateway to a fascinating rocky world: its south coast boasts kilometres of deserted beaches, edged with sand dunes and magnificent rainbow-coloured cliffs, alongside the ocean.

This dream coastline can be explored in a buggy. A real way of life in north-eastern Brazil, these small, roofless cars designed to cross all types of terrain offer unrivalled freedom.

A driver-guide with expert knowledge of the surrounding area will assist you during this unusual adventure. Before leaving Fortaleza, he will explain to you how to handle your particularly responsive vehicle. Its light weight and the large tyres of its rear end and its rear-wheel drive makes its performance impressive both on the shoreline and on the sand dunes. If you drive smoothly and cautiously you can nevertheless avoid the traps of a shifting ground surface. Keen to experience new sensations, you will be completely enthused by the idea of stress-free driving on Brazilian beaches.

Beaches as far as the eye can see

The capital of Ceará vanishes and you launch yourself towards what is referred to the Cliff Route. With your hair flying in the wind, you speed through unspoiled landscapes stretching out as far as the eye can see. On the land, red and white-hued sand dunes alternate with ochre-coloured cliffs sculpted by erosion. In some places, freshwater springs gush from the rocks, while at sea, the intense blue of the ocean calms you, and you are intoxicated by the salty sea air. Out at sea, a dazzling sun lights up the hulls of the jangadas, fragile fishing boats with triangular sails.

As you leave Caponga, on the beach of Águas belas, the palm leafed parasols of the Barraca Meu Refugio restaurant, planted in the sand, offer you a warm welcome. The perfect place for a lunch break. While a mariscada (fish and seafood stew with coconut milk) is simmering, slip on your swimsuit and enjoy a dip in the tantalising waters, at temperatures of around 27°C. You will be full of praise for the good life, Brazilian style.

And here you go along this seaside boulevard open to all the winds. The river Choró brings you to a halt. How can you reach the other bank? Do not panic. A ferry boat crossing adds a touch of spice to the trip. You can even board with your vehicle.

Rocky curiosities in Morro Branco

At the controls of your multicoloured buggy, you cross the long, sun-drenched beaches once more to one of the most beautiful sites on the Ceará coast: Morro Branco.

After a drive of 90 km, you arrive on the outskirts of the village of Beberibe. Leave your vehicle to explore the amazing natural phenomenon which appears in front of you. In the hollow of the eroded cliffs stretches a multi-hued sandy area. This site with its surreal colours, which is nicknamed “the labyrinth”, will transport you into a magical world. Follow your guide along a path across a small canyon, its red rocks contrasting strongly with the blue of the sky and the ocean. Here and there, cactuses emerge from the sand. You will run into travellers, who, like you, are enraptured by such beauty. This fantastical landscape has become a set for Brazilian TV and film productions.

Recover from your emotions at the SJ bar, on the beach at Beberibe. With your feet on the sand, quench your thirst with a guava juice while keeping an eye on the surfers braving the waves.
In a craft shop, you will fall for a traditional object: a bottle filled with coloured sand from these natural ramparts which mark the local landscapes. As the sun sinks in the sky, make the most of the lively terraces or perhaps resume your journey.
