Omiya Bonsai Festival

Just 30 minutes away from Tokyo by train, the village of Omiya is the international centre of the Bonsai tree. This festival brings together experts from around the world.

This annual festival allows you to visit numerous private gardens in the province of Saitama over three days. The Bonsai museum is also open and a dozen garden centres are available for a visit. The art of the Bonsai is more than 1,000 years old, but it became popular in the 12th century in the Kamakura period. The art of the Bonsai is born of the aim to reproduce the beauty and the grandeur of natural Japanese landscapes. Flowers, tiny trees, and moss grow in a pot or on a plateau and are painstakingly cared for in order to be exposed as authentic objets d'art. You can purchase some rare specimens during this visit and also learn about the art.
