48 artists brought together under the arches of the Grand Palais

In August 2018, the King of Pop would have been 60 years old. To mark the occasion, the Grand Palais is holding an exhibition attracting international acclaim called “Michael Jackson: On the Wall”.

The event, located in the heart of Paris, adopts an entirely new approach by exploring the life of the star through an extensive collection of works created by 48 artists who have been inspired by Jackson in some way or other.

With his incomparable style, the singer has had an enduring influence, not only on the music scene and dance moves, but also on the worlds of fashion and art. From Andy Warhol to photographer David LaChapelle, generations of artists have been profoundly influenced by the moonwalk inventor.

Michael Jackson's legacy at its best

In the vast rooms of the Grand Palais' south-east gallery, wherever you look, Michael Jackson is there, represented in every kind of art form: some works are tiny, some are huge, some are drawings, some simply symbolic… You will be able to see a giant sculpture of the “Thriller” singer and Bubbles, his chimpanzee, by Jeff Koons. Further on, dozens of fantastically framed magazine and album covers take over the walls. The ‘Equestrian Portrait' of the star, by Kehinde Wiley, is a kitsch take on Rubens' original ‘King Philip II on Horseback'.

In ‘Neverland' by Jordan Wolfson, Michael Jackson is simply symbolised by two drawn eyes. In ‘P.Y.T.', a work by Appau Junior Boakye-Yiadom, Jackson is represented by two loafer shoes tied to bunches of balloons. And what can we say about Mark Flood's collage? Michael Jackson is depicted as a four-eyed alien with a wide toothy grin standing next to E.T.!

In another room, do not miss ‘Michael Jackson 23', Andy Warhol's famous portrait in acid colours which made the cover of Time magazine on 19 March 1984.

“Michael Jackson: On the Wall” is so much more than a tribute. It is a reflexion of the mark left by Michael Jackson on contemporary art and pop culture for decades. Whatever you do, do not miss it!
