Pierre Bonnard: Painting Arcadia

San Francisco receives the first exhibition of the French artist on the US West Coast in more than 50 years. On show, seventy works of this major figure of modernism.

Revealed by the Musée d'Orsay in Paris last year, this retrospective of the French painter Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) covers his entire career, from his early Nabi Post-Impressionist paintings, which gently lead him towards total abstraction. Bonnard's works are particularly rich and varied, but they all have in common a subtle working of colour. The juxtaposition of bright colours inspired by the light of southern France, and cooler hues characterise each of his still lifes, portraits, scenes of life, and pastoral landscapes. It is these latter paintings that have earned him his position as a leading representative of the Arcadian pictorial current.
