Souk el Tayeb: Beirut's first farmer's market

Nothing better than a Saturday stroll through stalls of organic produce straight from the farm.

In 2004, Kamal Mouzawak organised the first farmer's market in Lebanon, exclusively for local organic and sustainable products.

Every Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., farmers and artisans of all faiths, bring their best to the Souk el Tayeb market, which serves as a showcase of the country's multiculturalism. Druse, Shiites, Sunnis, and Christians from the coast, the mountains, the Bekaa Valley, or the outskirts of town make the weekly pilgrimage. The sight of colourful baskets and the aroma of garlic and spice are intoxicating. The selection of quality crafts on sale is impressive baskets, soaps, and embroidery, all made by local designers.

Restaurant Tawlet is the perfect spot for people watching, and the lunch is delicious.
