The Festejos Populares de Zapote make San José smile

These popular festivities, which include bull races and fairs, celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of the next in an authentic, joyful ambiance.

The fiestas in Zapote, a suburb in the southeast part of the capital, will attract San José residents and Costa Rican families from across the country, as well as foreign visitors discovering the ‘toros a la tica'. These corridas do not lead to the deaths of the bulls (which is forbidden in the country), but participants will race the angry bulls, with the toughest candidates even trying to ride on the bull's back. As for the toreros, they need to pull the ornament off of the bull's back to win. All around the arena there are carousels for the children, food stands, and makeshift bars for parents as well as concerts to make everyone dance!
