The influence of punk in contemporary art

Do not miss this wilfully rebellious exhibition at The Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA) about the cultural legacy of the punk movement.

Just off La Rambla, Richard Meier's imposing MACBA, with its pristine glass walls and facades, presents an edifying exhibition dedicated to the punk movement and the traces it has left in contemporary art. The installations, paintings, photographs, and videos of more than 50 international artists attest to punk's influence.

The themes—noise, denial, violence, nihilism, and sexuality—rage on today, just as they did for the movement's historical antecedents, as described in the 1989 book Lipstick Traces by the journalist and critic Greil Marcus. The MACBA show, which energetically probes the heart and soul of the underground, provides a definitive overview.
