Tyre: the great ancient city

The amazing Roman ruins in Tyre, just 83 km south of Beirut, are well worth the drive. As are the beaches!

The two archaeological sites in the ancient city of Tyre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are spectacular.

An arena, spas, and the palaestra the wrestling school are in the first. In the second is a magnificent Roman-Byzantine necropolis, with many sarcophagi, funerary buildings and enclosures, and chapels. The monumental arch is impressive, as is 2nd-century racetrack one of the biggest in the Roman world, it could hold up to 20,000 people, and it now hosts a summer music festival.

Tyre is also home to eight kilometres of beaches with crystal clear water, making this one of the most beautiful stretches of seaside in the country.
