Wifredo Lam at the Reina Sofía

A huge hit in Paris at the Pompidou Centre, this dazzling retrospective of the famous Cuban painter is now at Spain's national museum of 20th century art.

Officially open since 1992, the Queen Sofía Museum is mainly dedicated to 20th century Spanish art, though it's permanent collection contains many jewels by artists from around the world, and its temporary exhibitions, like this large retrospective of the works of the famous Cuban painter Wifredo Lam (1902-1982), are always big draws.

About 400 of his paintings, drawings, photographs, magazines and books are in the exhibit, which is divided into five periods of his life: « Spain, 1923-1938 », « Paris-Marseille, 1938-1941 », « Cuba and the Americas, 1941-1952, » « Paris, Caracas, La Havana, Albissola, Zurich, 1952-1967”, and “Paris and Albissola Marina, 1962-1982. » His seminal work, The Jungle (1943), is on loan from the MoMA in New York.
